Study: 84% reduction in absorbtion of Flavan-3-ols with Banana smoothie

Post by Boxcost »

It has taken a while for this study to sink in, it is only a small one but the results are striking...mixing high polyphenol oxidase (PPO) based food with Flavan-3-ols based food impairs the " bioavailability of flavan-3-ols, and most likely other dietary polyphenol bioactives" - buy a whopping 84%!

When I first read this study it was Noooooooooooooooooo!  - I have been mixing banana / ripe banana in a smoothie with berries and cacao powder nearly every day for 20 years!

And of course, last couple of years... yeah Beet greens are good for you, so I 'used' to occasionally chuck them in the smoothie as well

again from the study https://pubs.rsc.org/en/content/article ... d3fo01599h

Products     PPO activity (KU/100 g of edible portion)        (−)-Epicatechin (mg per 100 g of edible portion)
Banana                          3258 ± 71                                                      0.2 (0–0.07)
Beet greens                   1594 ± 24                                                       n/a
