Ultimate anti-aging remedy is ultrasound therapy? Sound waves show ‘fountain of youth’ effect on cells

Post by jocko6889 »

The focus of senolytics is to destroy harmful senescent cells, which are cells that have stopped dividing, refuse to die and emit harmful toxins that cause inflammation and aging. But what if instead of killing them, scientists could find a way to revive these cells and make them behave normally again?

This was the stunning finding in a new study using low frequency ultrasound (less than 100 kilohertz — well below the 2,000 or so used for medical imaging) in order to "revive" senescent cells, awakening them from their "zombie-like" state and making them behave like normal, younger cells again. Experiments in older mice using the technique found that cells seemed to age in reverse, helping the animals run further and faster in treadmill tests.
"The findings offer hope of warding off frailty, keeping people fit into their 70s and 80s. A clinical trial is in the planning stages to see if the technique is safe and can combat age-related diseases."

"Scientists have previously focused on 'flushing' out dead and dying cells. This is the first study to show they can actually be 'revived'."

How does the treatment rejuvenate cells?
"A possible biological explanation for why this treatment appears to work is ultrasound physically distorts cells, producing similar effects to exercise. In particular, it may be reactivating interior waste disposal systems which grind to a halt in senescent cells."
