Major breakthrough in aging

Post by PJM »

"An international study 13 years in the making demonstrates for the first time that degradation in the way DNA is organized and regulated — known as epigenetics — can drive aging in an organism, independently of changes to the genetic code itself. The work shows that a breakdown in epigenetic information causes mice to age and that restoring the integrity of the epigenome reverses those signs of aging."

In other words, they made young mice old and made old mice young again.

“This is the first study showing that we can have precise control of the biological age of a complex animal; that we can drive it forwards and backwards at will,” said Dr. David Sinclair [yup, him].

The study was published in Cell, the leading journal in biochemistry and molecular biology.

Here's an article in Science magazine about the Harvard study and also a forthcoming paper on related work by Rejuvenate Bio in San Diego.

It quotes some scientists who offer a degree of skepticism about whether age reversal has really been accomplished and also about the practical application of the work for treatment of humans.

yes this is one of those issues that will meet with resistance in the science community just because it is so revolutionary.

but they have discovered the 4-5 major switches in our epigenome that play large roles in aging in either direction.
