Based on a new study in Nature Cell Biology, it may be possible to reverse the age of blood in older adults by returning blood stem cells to a younger state.
Blood cells are all created by a small number of stem cells inside bone marrow, called hematopoietic stem cells. Over time, these cells produce fewer and fewer red blood cells, leading to anemia, fewer immune cells, or mistakes in DNA that can lead to cancer. So researchers focused on trying to find a way to rejuvenate hematopoietic stem cells so that they would make younger red blood cells again, including improving the environment where they reside.
It turns out the environment in bone marrow becomes more and more inflammatory over time, leading to dysfunction in the blood stem cells. By blocking the inflammation with a drug called anakinra, researchers were able to return blood stem cells to a younger, healthier state.

Great post. Very hard to rejuvinate blood if the factory for cells is comprimised.
