Scientists have discovered that cytomegalovirus (CMV) can be used as a monthly inhaled gene therapy for delivering the exogenous genes TERT or FST safely and effectively.

Exogenous telomerase reverse transcriptase or follistatin genes were safely and effectively delivered in mice. The treatment significantly improved biomarkers associated with healthy aging, and the mouse lifespan was increased up to 41% without an increased risk of cancer.

Treated mice also retained coat shine and smooth texture, and experienced less hair loss when compared to the control group.
