The healthiest food: nothing

Post by rhett »

Had a funny thought this morning. People love to talk about the “healthiest foods”. But given what we know about fasting, it would be awesome if they added a new food group to the pyramid: the “nothing” food group.

Making sure that you get your daily recommended serving of “nothing” is at the very least as important as getting your daily recommended serving of vegetables, yet nutrition info is built around putting things into your body.

Good point. People are always looking for something they could add to their nutrition to solve some problem, when they actually should be removing.

Our bodies operate just fine when young and don't need any special diet or supplements.

It is years over eating too much crap that leads to metabolic dysfunction that makes them unhealthy.

Getting blood glucose/insulin levels under control is job 1, and some form of fasting (and exercise) really helps.

Everything else is a distant second priority.

The “ nothing food group” rhett.
That could catch on..
I have changed my 16/8 daily fast or “nothing food group” from 5pm to 9am. It makes life a little easier with morning vitamins that are better taken with food. Also I have noticed better sleep patterns with the stomach being noticeably more empty before retiring due to the longer digestive time..

Yup, so true, back to basics!

Check out this article, very fitting:

"'Super' foods are often nothing of the sort, Queensland nutritional researchers find":

It is incredible how quickly the body accepts intermittent fasting. Within 2 or 3 days the body begins to change and seems to appreciate the smaller quantities of food.
I believe the quantity of food that is eaten is by way off bad habits and convenience entirely.
Emphasis should be put on smaller amounts of higher quality food items spread over your non fasting period.
No pain No gain...

Totally agree!

Not only are we talking about intermittent fasting here but restrictive dieting as well.

I used to get 5 migraines a week on average. Light and sound were my worst enemies. For 3 years I went to doctors and specialists to be MRI’d and put on strong medications. (An anti depressant medication that also worked well for migraines)

But when All of the above failed, I started to cut things out of my diet one by one on a whim to see if that might make a difference. It wasn’t long before I cut out the key culprit and my headaches went from 5/week to zero!! The ingredient was SUGAR!

I found out there after I have a sugar intolerance on my own.

If only more doctors and professionals could use this ideology, that maybe we should remove something from the diet instead of just adding medications.

I am sure there are plenty of docs that do think this way, but in my personal experience this was not the case.

Vandevalk1.
Unfortunately it seems that there are still many Doctors that don’t, and will probably never think that way.
In the majority of cases, the “band aid” solution is utilised by way of prescription medication rather than trying to get to the root of the problem..
Acting on your “Gut Feeling” can sometimes furnish a better outcome.

Agreed!

I'm currently reading a book called "The 4 Pillar Plan: How to Relax, Eat, Move and Sleep Your Way to a Longer, Healthier Life" by (Dr.) Rangan Chatterjee, and he is of the philosophy of going back to basics and doing those things first before resorting to medications as a default. Understandably, sometimes medication is needed depending on the ailment, but it shouldn't just be the "go to" solution right off the bat - sometimes it can be something as "simple" as removing an ingredient from a person's diet (the doc talks about elimination diets in his book as well - as a way to test if something you're eating is causing the problem to rule out that aspect).

We need a paradigm shift in America to change health. We need to focus on wellness instead of sickness. Prevention is the key to long life and reducing costs in the health system. If change is to occur doctors need to stop being paid for sickness care and start being paid for wellness care. If you go to a medical office the way they get paid is to show you are sick. The only way to continue to get paid is to keep you sick.
The way the system should be designed is that if you come in and are well the doctor gets paid as long as you remain well. If you get sick(minor) then the doctor doesnt get paid again until you are well again. This system applies the focus to wellness not sickness.

Great post Drdavid.
Facts stated in your post should be addressed globally as well as in the USA.
We have similar problems with our health system where there is a government funded rebate offered to the practitioner in lieu of their normal consultation fee.
The sick are “ getting sicker” utilising the band aid solution of covering up the underlying problem. You are right in suggesting that practitioners should be paid to keep patients Healthy....
